You only get a little bit of Lam Ching-Ying in this early Bruce Lee vehicle, and much of that is doubling for Shek Kin.

Bruce Lee again shows his knack for tailoring his movies to his audience. This time, in his first US outing, he shifts from the "people's hero" mode of his earlier HK productions and takes on a larger James Bond-ish role for the US/International audience. And, again, Lee's movie has become an archetype by which other martial arts movies are made. This time the now classic international competition of martial artists used by the hero to infiltrate the big villain's stronghold. When John Saxon and Jim Kelly are wagering on each other's fights, Lam Ching-Ying is sitting right behind them. But you can also see him fight in this one, you just may not realize it. Lam was the double for the star villain of the piece, Shek Kin, who was in his 70's when the movie was filmed. Bolo Yeung is cool, as usual, as the Samson-ish enforcer, and John Saxon and Jim Kelly add familiar faces for the American audience. In all, an enjoyable film that may seem somewhat cliched now that it has been imitated so many times. -gg-

Personally I don't see what's so good about this film, apart from Bruce Lee. It was funny to see Sammo Hung fighting him at the beginning-so he was the chubby guy! It's another cliche film from the 70's, directed by gwai lo! Ignoring that fact, it's not too bad. Shek Kin looks positively evil, he seems to have been born into the villian role. That famous end fight with the mirrors is about the best thing from this movie, with LCY fighting with Bruce. Some trivia-Shek Kin was so scared when they were taping that scene, because Bruce would actually forget he's in a film and started bashing him for real. He said that when fighting Bruce's eyes would "light up and he would become an animal". Just watch this and rejoice at Bruce Lee. -Cissi-
