Lam Ching-Ying produces and directs as well as costars in this latest adaptation of the classic pulp hero. Lam gains a beatnik look for his role as one of the Green Hornet's mentors.

Chin Kar-Lok stars as a Green Hornet who's having a little trouble with the second law of the Hornet. He more closely resembles Kato in the American TV series featuring Bruce Lee. Lam plays one of the Hornet's mentors in this enjoyable movie that amazingly was only in Hong Kong theatres for 3 days. It won a Golden Banana award for one of the worst dramas of 1994, voted by a public that had never seen the movie. The main criticism was that it was 10 years behind the times; a complaint often uttered by those who alternatively complain that they don't make them the way they used to. Chin Kar-Lok shines as the young Hornet, one of the rare on-screen superheroes who seems to really enjoy being a hero - like Billy Zane's Phantom. And Esther Kwan sparkles in her role as one part Lois Lane and one part Robin from Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns. Yu Rong-Guang plays the Green Hornet's adversarial friend on the Police force, and is more likeable in this movie than in many of his roles. A simple, enjoyable story with a light sense of fun, one you can watch with your kids (if you've got 'em) without any major qualms. -gg-
