(1988)
Producer: Tsui Hark, John Shum Kin-Fun
This Tsui Hark production is light SciFi fun, with more than a slight tip of the hat to Fritz Lang's Metropolis. If you think gangs are a problem now, wait until the future when they've got big robots to back them up. Of course, this leads to the robot Maria, as you might guess from the Metropolis reference. John Shum gets a leading role for a change, as a weapons developer for the police who winds up entangled in a friendship with Tsui Hark (in one of his biggest on-screen roles), on the other side of the law. Both find nothing but trouble as they wind up in the middle of opposing forces with no hope except Maria. Very enjoyable with good performances and the strong visual style that made Tsui Hark famous.
